Short-term cash help and work supports for families with children. Run by your state with its own rules and benefit amounts.

Who it’s for: Low-income families with children (or pregnant). Income limits, time limits, and work requirements are set by each state.

SSI (Supplemental Security Income)

Monthly payments for people with limited income and resources who are 65+, blind, or have a qualifying disability.

Who it’s for: Age 65+, blind, or disabled, with limited income and under the resource limit ($2,000 individual / $3,000 couple).

Social Security Administration

Free Tax Prep (VITA) & the EITC

Federal

IRS-certified volunteers prepare your taxes for free and help you claim refundable credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).

Who it’s for: VITA generally serves people earning about $64,000 or less, people with disabilities, and limited-English speakers. The EITC is for low-to-moderate-income workers.

Free or low-cost budgeting and debt counseling from nonprofit, accredited agencies — no debt-settlement sales pitch.

Who it’s for: Open to anyone. Counseling sessions are free or low-cost; agencies are nonprofit and accredited.
